Don't leave money on the table. You are entitled to a refund on the tax you paid for shopping. Follow these steps before you drop your bags
1. 💰 Get Your Money Back (VAT Refund)
Tourists get ~85% of the VAT back on goods. Here is exactly how to claim it.
- Step 1: The "250 Rule" (In the Shop)
- You must spend a minimum of 250 AED in a single shop to be eligible.
- Action: At the checkout, tell the cashier: "I need a Tax-Free Tag."
- They will stick a Planet Tax Free QR code on your receipt. You cannot claim without this tag.
- Step 2: The "Planet" Kiosk (At the Airport)
- Where: Look for the "Planet" kiosks in the Departures Hall before you go to the airline check-in counter.
- Process:
- Scan your Passport.
- Scan the Tax-Free Tags on your receipts.
- Select "Credit Card" (Refund in 10 days) or "Cash" (Maximum 35,000 AED limit).
- ⚠️ Important: Sometimes the machine turns "Red" and asks for inspection. This means an officer wants to see the goods. Do not pack expensive items (iPhones, Gold, Bags) deep in your check-in luggage until you finish this step. Keep them accessible.
2. ✈️ Airport Strategy (Don't Miss the Flight)
- Arrive Early: DXB is massive. Arrive 3.5 to 4 hours before your flight time. Immigration lines can take 45+ minutes during peak seasons.
- Know Your Terminal:
- Terminal 3: Exclusively for Emirates.
- Terminal 1: Most international airlines (IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, British Airways).
- Terminal 2: Usually for FlyDubai and some budget regional flights.
- Action: Check your ticket carefully. Going to T3 instead of T1 requires a long bus/taxi ride.
3. ⚖️ The "Excess Baggage" Trap
Weigh your bags at the hotel. The airport is merciless.
- The Cost: If your bag is overweight at the counter, airlines like IndiGo or Air India Express charge approximately 50 AED to 60 AED per kg.
- Example: 5kg extra = 300 AED (₹6,800).
- The Fix:
- If you know you are overweight, buy extra baggage online 12 hours before your flight. It is usually 50% cheaper than paying at the airport.
