Your Indian apps (Swiggy, Ola, UPI) won't work here. Download these 5 apps before you board your flight to save data and stress.
1. ๐ Calling Home (The "WhatsApp" Problem)
- The Rule: WhatsApp Text works perfectly. WhatsApp Calls (Video/Audio) are BLOCKED by the government.
- The Solution (Download ONE of these):
- BOTIM: The most popular app in UAE. It works for free (with ads) or you can pay a small fee to remove ads. Family in India must also download it.
- GoChat: The official app by Etisalat. Very stable and free for voice/video calls.
- Google Meet / Zoom: These generally work for "Business" meetings (links sent via calendar), but are sometimes restricted for personal calls. Stick to BOTIM for family.
- โ ๏ธ Important Note on VPNs:
- Avoid using free VPNs to bypass the ban. It drains your battery, the connection often drops, and accessing restricted content is technically illegal with heavy fines. Just use BOTIMโitโs legal and clear.
2. ๐ Getting Around (No Ola Here!)
- Careem: This is the "Super App" of the Middle East.
- Use it for: Booking "Hala Taxi" (The affordable RTA taxi) and ordering food.
- Why: It gives you the exact price estimate so the driver can't cheat you.
- S'hail (by RTA): The Official Transport App.
- Why you need it: It is the only app that gives accurate real-time Metro and Bus timings. It also tells you the cost of your trip before you go.
- 2GIS (or Google Maps):
- Google Maps is great, but 2GIS works offline and shows you which building entrance to use (very helpful for massive Dubai malls).
3. ๐ Food & Grocery (Vegetarian Friendly)
- Talabat: The "Zomato/Swiggy" of Dubai.
- Best Feature: Huge variety. Use the filter "Pure Veg" to find safe restaurants.
- Noon Food: Often has massive discounts (like 50% off) for new users.
- InstaShop / Careem Quik: For grocery delivery in 20-30 minutes if you forgot to buy water or milk.
4. ๐ For Students (The "Digital ID")
- UAE PASS:
- If you are a Student or on a long-term visit, download UAE PASS. It creates a secure digital identity for you to sign documents and access government services without carrying your passport everywhere.
