1. 💧 The "Tap Water" Question
Can you drink water from the tap in Dubai?
- The Answer: Technically, YES. The water supply (DEWA) is clean and potable.
- The Reality: Most locals and expats DO NOT drink straight from the tap. Why? Because the tank/pipes in the building might not be clean.
- TVT Advice:
- Stick to Bottled Water (Oasis, Mai Dubai, Al Ain). It is very cheap (approx 5-8 AED for a 6-pack of 1.5L bottles).
- Or buy a simple Brita Filter Jug for your room.
2. 🎭 The Famous "Italian Suit" Scam (Must Read)
This is the #1 scam reported on Dubai Reddit. Don't fall for it.
- The Scenario: A well-dressed man in a car pulls up to you (usually near metro stations or parking lots). He asks for directions to the airport.
- The Hook: He claims to be a fashion designer (Armani/Versace) leaving Dubai. He says he has "extra luxury suits" he can't take on the flight and offers to gift them to you for a small amount of cash (for "gas money" or "rental car fee").
- The Scam: The suits are cheap fakes worth nothing.
- Action: Walk away immediately. Do not engage.
3. 💸 Tipping Culture (Do I need to tip?)
Unlike the USA, it is not mandatory. Unlike India, it is expected in some places.
- Restaurants: Check the bill. If there is a "Service Charge" included, you don't need to tip. If not, 10-15% is standard for good service.
- Taxis: Rounding up the fare is polite (e.g., if the fare is 18 AED, give 20 AED).
- Delivery Drivers: 2-5 AED is appreciated, especially in the summer heat.
4. 🍺 Buying Alcohol (For Tourists)
You cannot buy alcohol at supermarkets (Carrefour/Lulu). They only sell "0% Non-Alcoholic" beer.
- The Rule: You must go to specialized shops like MMI or African + Eastern.
- The Process: As a tourist, you can get a Free Instant License. Just show your Passport and Visa at the counter to buy legally.
- Warning: Drinking strictly inside your hotel/apartment or licensed bars. Never on the street or beach.
